ok i been using ubuntu for a while now but this is my first attempt on my laptop . can anyone tell how to get my wireless connection to work? its an integral part of my life bc i need wireless access for my classes
This is one of those questions that is perhaps best answered by the regular Ubuntu forums. Lucid's pretty good about working right out of the box for most hardware, and has made great strides with wireless connections. The easiest step to try first is to connect your laptop with a wired connection and run an update (System > Administration > Update Manager). It should pick up your wireless card (or whatever) right away. If not, try System > Administration > Hardware Drivers while still physically connected.
It's ironic that you need a physical connection before you can make your wireless connection work. Knowing that my laptop uses proprietary drivers for its integral wireless board, I didn't even attempt an install without a physical connection.
If you still cannot make it work after following the simple steps above, check with the main Ubuntu forums. You'll need to know what sort of hardware you're using, or at least be able to read the manufacturer's logo and model.
It entirely depends on which wireless chipset you have. Many "just work" and you only need to enter the password for your encryption.
Some need a proprietary driver installed. Many of these are included on the CD and you need to go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to see if there are any recommendations.
Other than that, as Kinslayer said, this part of SE is identical to the standard Ubuntu so any info you find on the 'net about it should be applicable.
