Ubuntu Satanic granted trademark license

June 22nd, 2009

Within a day of the Ubuntu SE store being closed down due to “intellectual Property” violation, the issue has been cleared up. Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu community manager, said the letter was “some kind of mistake” and that SE would be granted an “official trademark license”.

Thanks to everyone in the community who got behind us and also Ubuntu and Canonical for “not being evil”. That’s our job, after all.

The store will be back on line once we receive the official license agreement.

Canonical shut down Ubuntu SE store

June 18th, 2009

You may know that we used to have a cafepress store which sold t-shirts and stickers. It was completely commission free and we made no money from it - which made the stuff as cheap as possible. Well, it seems that Canonical is enforcing their intellectual property rights over the Ubuntu name. The store is now closed and you will no longer be able to buy any Ubuntu Satanic merchandise.

This saddens us. We are big fans of Ubuntu and have a lot of respect for Canonical. However, they need to understand that a phenomenon such as Ubuntu is only as strong as its community and alienating that community over the sale of a couple of lousy t-shirts is not the way to go.

Jesus’ Jugular Released

April 23rd, 2009

Ubuntu Satanic Edition 666.6 (Jesus’ Jugular)

Ubuntu Satanic Edition isn’t just an operating system, it’s the new order. Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain. Unleash its might onto your computer by dressing in the still warm skin of a Stag, letting the blood run over your naked flesh and onto your keyboard as you type sudo apt-get install ubuntu-satanic. Marvel as the darkness penetrates your screen and buries itself in the depths of your soul. Let your ears bleed and your head frenzy. Play the sycophant. Revel in your pain. Let all other software bow down. It is your destiny.

Severed Fifth

November 3rd, 2008

The Severed Fifth project is exactly the kind of thing Ubuntu Satanic Edition is about. A heavy metal music project with the aim of exploring “what is possible when an independent artist releases their work in the new music economy”. Their first album, Denied By Reign, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license and available for download now.

The project fuses neck-wrenching music with solid principles. We support and applaud everything they stand for. Check it out:

Banned from Distrowatch

August 7th, 2008

Ever wondered why Ubuntu Satanic Edition is not on Distrowatch, the popular guide to the world of Linux? We contacted Ladislav Bodnar, the maintainer of the site, and this was his reply:

There is no way I am going to add this distro to DistroWatch. Two reasons:

“1. I don’t consider the name “Satanic edition” as an appropriate name for a Linux distribution. Believe me, there are many very sensitive people visiting DistroWatch who would be offended by the name of your distro. There is a line between what is and what isn’t an appropriate name for a software product and I believe that you’ve crossed that line.

2. Ubuntu is a registered trademark of Canonical. You need to show me an official permission from Canonical that grants you the use of the word Ubuntu in your product’s name.

Regards,
Ladislav”

When we’d got up off the floor, we send the following response:

“Woah!

What about Muslim and Christian editions?! It seems that your worries about trademark infringement and offensive material don’t stop you from including those.

I thought Distrowatch was supost to be a list of Linux distributions. Surely it your purpose is to reflect the world of Linux and not dictate it.”

So, it seems you won’t be seeing your favourite distro on “distro”watch. At least until hell freezes over.
