As a Christian, I would not personally install SE, obviously it is not quite my taste. But I had to look at the website (after seeing it mentioned on the Wikipedia article about Ubuntu CE) and I must say you have done a great job with these images. Very high quality, and quite amusing! If I had images this quality on a topic I actually wanted displayed on my desktop I would certainly be downloading them!

  2. Garry Says:

Maybe we should do an Ubuntu SE Christian Edition :-)

Actually, I’ve been working on some wallpapers and screensavers using the standard Ubuntu logo… should be available soon.

  3. Dead2Fall Says:

Where can i grab that wallpaper in the video, the diamond plate background one

  4. Garry Says:

Well spotted. It’s brand new and intended for the next release of SE. It’s currently only on my desktop!

…but as you asked so nicely, here it is:

The above link is for the 1680×1050 widescreen version. The 4:3 version is rendering as we speak. I’ll link it here when it’s ready.

  5. Garry Says:

OK, here’s the 1600×1200 version, hot off the press!

  8. Pastor Billy-Reuben Says:

You make me sick! This is all a big joke to you isn’t it?

Well, when Jesus comes back with a sword in his mouth, I guarantee He won’t be laughing.

    Pastor Billy-Reuben

    Rev 2:16

  9. Garry Says:

    Hi Pastor,

Thanks for the like to your website. The unfortunate thing is that the crap on there is not a joke.

  10. BlueJayofEvil Says:

The Pastor’s link is to Landover Baptist, a prominent parody site that mocks fundamentalism with humor. Anything that comes from them is intended to be satirical and funny, including the comment Pastor Billy-Reuben made.

Just an FYI so no one takes it to seriously ;)

BTW, love the Satanic theme you’ve come up with! :)

  11. sethiric Says:

You can add this to Kubuntu Satanic Edition:

Between UbuntuSE and Dethklok, I don’t know which is more BRUTAL! Thanks for the kick a$$ theme! Keep it up! BTW.. everyone loves the raytraced screensaver! BLEEDING edge man! WTG!

  14. Garry Says:

    We hear your call, Ktulu!

That’s the kind of comment we like to hear down here at Ubuntu SE HQ.

  15. anubis Says:

this is something i have always wanted, great work, you gotta love people who give so much effort to be unconventional…..

  16. aphswarrior Says:

love the screensavers and backgrounds - great work! however, is there a possibility that the eternal damnation screensaver could be centered and sized down a bit, similar to the eternal ubuntu screensaver, so that all of it can be seen at once and so that it can be appreciated in all its unholy glory? if rerendering the mpg is too much effort, im cool with the current screensavers - they’re awesome!

  17. Garry Says:

    Hi Aphswarrior,

I’ve already rendered what I think you’re after; I’ll include it in an Eternal Damnation II plugin soon. Watch this space…

  18. aphswarrior Says:

I’ll be looking at this space very hard…I’m looking forward to it!

  19. horny cockroach Says:

    i installed eternity-screensaver and eternal-damnation
but how do you swich from glass 2 to the other 2 screensavers?

    I don’t find them,and “Eternity” can’t be setuped.

    (Kubuntu,32bit,feisty)

  20. Garry Says:

    Hi,

On Kubuntu, right-click the desktop and select “Configure Desktop…”.

In the Screensaver section, the SE screensaver is called Eternal Damnation. The Ubuntu screensaver is “Eternal Ubuntu” and the default screensaver is “Eternity”.

Let me know if you can’t find them.

  21. horny cockroach Says:

I figured what’s going on.I naively expected to have the 3 screensavers separate,in fact they are all in the “eternal damnation”.I just didn’t wait long enough to see the other two.

I find this setup quite weird.I actually downloaded it,for the pentagram.

  22. Garry Says:

I know where you’re coming from. Some people prefer them to cycle and some don’t. Unfortunately, we’re constrained by the dumbed-down interface to Gnome Screensaver - it makes configuration of this through the GUI impossible.

However, it’s perfectly possible to select just the pentagram, or any combination of the animations by changing a config file. The following tutorial is actually for disabling the pentagram (!), but it’s just as easy to specify only the pentagram, so it will burn on forever…

    http://parker1.co.uk/eternity/configuration.php

You can also use the config file to change the number of loops of each animation and even set the frame rate.

  23. Paul Says:

    Dear Ubuntu SE team:

Congratulation for these awesome and great packages, your wonderful work is runing on my PCs and Notebook at home on Ubuntu 7.04 i386 and AMD64 .
By the way I tested them on Ubuntu 7.10 Beta and is working fine the whole thing (splash, usplash. login window, screensaver and backgrounds) under compiz-fusion and emerald themes.

Once again, amazing work…. Thank You

  24. Garry Says:

    Hi Paul,

Glad you like it! There will be some official gutsy packages along some time this week. I know, we’re late as usual…

  25. Jeff Says:

    Great work!

I got the boot screen and log out screen and desktop back ground

but I don’t get this installation part

Basically, you add the following lines to the end of your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
if some evil soul could help me that be great

  26. Gareth Doutch Says:

How do you make your windows disappear in a ball of flame like in the video?

  27. Garry Says:

    Hi Gareth,

It’s done using Compiz, which is now easier to get working than ever as it comes with Gutsy under “GL Desktop”. The burning windows are one of the standard Compiz effects - it can be found under Effects->Animations in the CompizConfig Settings Manager.

Give us a shout if you have any problems getting it working.

  28. Gareth Doutch Says:

OK, I’ve tried Burn and Explode, but the window just disappears… Any clues?

  29. Gareth Doutch Says:

Hmm, I think it’s cos I’ve got compiz and not Fusion. Time to apt-get…

  30. Gareth Doutch Says:

Nope I have CompizConfig and no clue…

  31. Garry Says:

    Hi Gareth,

Compiz Config is like a black art! Here’s what to do:

Save your current config by exporting your profile. This is done from Compiz Config under “Preferences”.

Once the config is saved, to change to burning windows:

In the “Category” menu on the left, click on “Effects”.

Click on the “Animations” button on the right.

    Select the [Close Animation] tab.

Highlight the top item in the list and click “Edit”.

Change the “Close effect” drop down to “Burn”. Hit OK.

    That’s it. Burning windows.

  32. Gareth Doutch Says:

Cheers Garry, you’re a saint of darkness!!! >:)

  33. Atspy Says:

Love the screensaver! The only one worth having as far as I’m concerned.

How are the animations encoded? Mpeg2, I think, but can you share some more details on the format/bitrate/etc?

  34. Garry Says:

    Cheers Atspy,

Yes, the animations are MPEG2. I hacked the player from electric sheep so that it reads a list of anims from a config file and loops them without any pauses. So, the format of the animations is exactly the same as the sheep on electric sheep. This is an MPEG2-PS format. I use the following script to convert a list of png files generated by POVRay into MPEG2:

    http://ubuntusatanic.org/satanic-files/eternity-gen

It uses ffmpeg to convert them to MPEG-TS and then mencoder to convert them to MPEG-PS. It’s the only way I could get the electricsheep player to play them, but it works. Note that the script only works if you have >100 png files. Change the %3d.png to %2d.png if you have less.

I’ve been working on a player which plays Ogg Theora (open MPEG4 format) files, which should allow for higher resolution clips without the size getting too large. So, that’s the next project.

  35. Atspy Says:

    Wow! That is great!

I was going a much longer route trying to add a video to my wife’s laptop. I was trying to pull all my png images into stopmotion and generate an mpeg from there. From there I was trying to generate the mpeg-ps from the resulting file. This just ended up with horrible video quality (and that quite possible could be error on my part too).

I’m going to give your script a shot tonight and see if I fair any better.

  36. Atspy Says:

Beautiful, your script worked wonderfully. The quality of my video looks much better than before. I’ve now inserted another video in between the eternity videos.

    Thanks!

  37. Garry Says:

It’s great to hear that you’ve been able to get it working. This is the first time I’ve heard of somebody using the Eternity screensaver to play their own stuff. Nice one!
