Satanic Community Screenshots

May 23rd, 2008

If you run Ubuntu Satanic, we’d like to see it. Send us your screenshots and we’ll put them on a new page dedicated to showing the world how dark a desktop can look.

In fact, we’d like to see any pictures of you running SE – photos of your laptop, photos of you, photos of you sacrificing a lamb and letting the blood drip across your keyboard. Anything.

Send your images to Garry or post a link in the comments section.

Back with a Vengeance!

April 17th, 2008

Ubuntu Satanic is now hosted on its own dedicated Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 server. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused while we were running on the old platform and during the transition period. From now on the site should fly along and downloads should be more reliable.

If you spot any problems or have performance issues with the site or APT repository then please let us know so that we can resolve them as quickly as possible.

Now that the server move is complete we can get on with the important stuff – the next release of Ubuntu SE, “Headless Horseman”, should be available next week.

Website Problems

April 17th, 2008

We were informed yesterday by our hosting provider that this site will be suspended in 5 days due to heavy traffic. This seems to be due to downloads generated by people upgrading to Hardy, which is surprising because not only is Hardy still in beta, the Ubuntu Satanic updates for Hardy aren’t even available yet.

We are in the process of organising a move to a dedicated Ubuntu server to host this site and the package repository. Hopefully this should be completed in the next couple of days. Until then, we have been moved to a “probation” server on our current host, so you may experience problems such as slow downloads.

Hopefully we can get this resolved as soon as possible and come back stronger than ever.

PS: the next release of Ubuntu Satanic Edition, Headless Horseman, will be released as soon as we’ve got the above problems sorted out.

Important Package Changes

March 13th, 2008

A few people have had problems with the way Ubuntu Satanic is packaged and some changes have been made to resolve any conflicts with other Ubuntu packages, such as UbuntuStudio.

The problems stemmed from the way the sound package was installed. We followed the way set by UbuntuStudio, where we replaced the ubuntu-sounds package with our own satanic-sounds. This replaces the login/logout WAVs with our own, meaning that no manual configuration is required.

However, the conflict with ubuntu-sounds meant that ubuntu-desktop was also removed when Ubuntu Satanic was installed. As this is only a metapackage, it should not be a problem. However, we now feel that it is best not to conflict with this package.

So, we’ve changed the satanic-sounds package (in version 666.3.1) to just install our sounds as separate files which must be selected by the user after installation.

To pickup this new change, do the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install satanic-sounds
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

See the configuration page for how to get the sounds working again.

Annus Horribilis

December 13th, 2007

Happy Birthday Ubuntu Satanic Edition.

It was a year ago today that the dark side of Ubuntu reared its ugly head and we’d like to thank all our users for your fantastic support.

Let’s crack open a beer and drink to many more years like this one. Thanks to Ubuntu and the entire open source community for giving us all the freedom to be better.

May we continue to reign in the blood of lesser operating systems!

New Themes Available

December 7th, 2007

To celebrate a year of Ubuntu Satanic Edition we’re releasing our biggest update yet. It includes new meta-packages for easier installation, two exclusive Gnome themes called Inhuman and Recant, a blood red icon set called Sanguine and subliminal login and logout sounds. See the screenshots.

The themes are intended to maintain the look of Ubuntu whilst giving it a dark and blood soaked edge. Our main aim was to provide usable themes which complimented our existing wallpapers.

Dark themes can pose a few issues, so be sure to checkout our dark theme tips section.

Note that the new packages are only available for Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. To upgrade, just run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-satanic

See our installation instructions for more details.
