Shuttleworth’s Views on Satanic Edition

The founder of Ubuntu has given his views on the black sheep of the family…

Ubuntu/Kubuntu founder and chief executive Mark Shuttleworth, answering a query from DesktopLinux.com, was philosophical in his response.

“Ubuntu is a broad church!” Shuttleworth wrote in an email. “We manage to keep both GNOME and KDE folks happy and collaborating constructively, so this should be no trouble at all.”

“Our guiding rules are enshrined in the Ubuntu Code of Conduct, and as long as all sides are following that, there’s no problem with derivatives that are focused on such diverse user bases,” the Ubuntu founder added.

Just a quick note to say that we’re glad the great man approves - he is our true Lord and Master!

    …wonder if he uses SE?

  2. Tony Says:

You guys need to get on with your life. This distro is childiss and harmfull to your spirit. More importantly it influences others in a bad way. All I can say is that regardless of ALL the hard work you put into this particular Disttro you need to let it fall by the wayside and do something worth doing, Get away from the Satanic preaching and follow the real leader of the universe - God!

  3. super_psycko Says:

jajaja no mames pinche tony.. neta si te la mamaste con eso

have fun and let others enjoy what you dont like

  4. super_psycko Says:

BTW.. this isnt a distro.. this is ONLY a set of themes.. wallpapers and stuff like that for customizing desktops

  5. Garry Says:

Hi Tony, thanks for your concern, but if we play by your rules then we should be okay as long as we repent in time. That way we can have our fun now and still get to meet Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Mother Teresa, Noah and all those other nice people up there.

    Hi MMA,

Nice to hear from you again. I hope Ubuntu Studio is going well. Maybe we could combine the projects and come up with Satanic Studio!

  8. Anna Says:

You guys are fantastic. Nothing can make my day other than coming here and have a jolly healthy laugh at all those who blindly oppose Ubuntu SE for no other reason than…god. Religion is bad for you, robs you of all the joy!
Garry, I must say, you are a bloody genius.

    Cheers

  9. Garry Says:

    Hi Anna,

Finally - someone who speaks sense! You make it all worthwhile.

    satan \o/ !

  11. Someguy Says:

tony, this is not a devil worshiping distro, this is an ironic and sarcastic distro.

Then again if you use Ubuntu CE you probably wont get that anyway… nevermind….

  12. Stefan Says:

Great idea for a variant, but are there any plans to add some..y’know..programs to it? Perhaps the same as the CE version, but inverted (so FoxTor with a Satanic theme instead of Firefox/Faith Browser, daily satanic quote system - things like that) to pad it out into a full distro and not just a makeover (a really nice makeover though.)

One minor gripe - there are no Kubuntu SE themes, they all still say Ubuntu. As a user of Kubuntu Edgy SE I’d like some destinction for us KDE-ers.

Keep up the good work - a Christian edition? what were they thinking?

  13. Garry Says:

    Hi Stefan,

There are plans to add programs to it (once we can think of some)… FoxTor is a great suggestion.

As Kubuntu is a variant of Ubuntu, is it really necessary to duplicate everything to say Kubuntu? I have lots of new artwork for Feisty and don’t really intend to create every piece twice. As long as the themes are available for KDM and Ksplash, isn’t that enough?

  14. Charax Says:

I suppose it isn’t strictly necessary, I just like the distinction - still, it’s a small change to make, isn’t it? I’d make it myself but image manipulation isn’t my strongpoint. Thanks a ton for the KSplash theme, though!

Anyway, as I said it’s a minor gripe, something that’d be nice if you have some free time and feel like it.

I chose FoxTor because the CE has Firefox with all the parental controls enhanced, so I thought the mirror of that would be a browser with as few restrictions on browsing as possible. I’d be glad to contribute more ideas if you like - is there a forum for this project (I’m not signing up to Wordpress)

    Keep up the Evil work.

Oh my Gawd, pardon the pun, I love it!

For the seriously infarcted here, let’s have some fun. If, you can’t enjoy the spirit here, the creativity, and the effort, go to, well…

C’mon, the Linux community is about free spirits, initiative, and fun in computing.

  19. zyphrexi Says:

As a christian, I find satanism hilarious in all it’s forms.

But I gotta ask… why SE? I mean why even have a satanic edition?

I can understand that families who want to prevent kids from seeing stuff they don’t approve of on the net using CE, but SE?

  20. Garry Says:

    Hi Zyphrexi,

That’s funny, we find Christianity hilarious in all its forms. As you might suspect, this gives us no end of laughs.

Families who want to prevent kids from seeing stuff they don’t approve of can spend two seconds installing some software. That’s the power of Ubuntu. People who want pictures of crosses and fish on their desktop can install Ubuntu CE. People who don’t can install Ubuntu SE.

  21. Coolvibe Says:

Well said Garry. I (as a “devout” Satanist) find the follies of our spirited christian brethren an unending source of entertainment and wonder (except of course when they pee in our pool by messing with our realities by trying to restrict our freedoms). The christians here that rebuke this “distro” are incredibly misguided and short-sighted.

Also, don’t forget that Satanism has nothing to do with devil-worship. Satanists are the adversaries of blind faith (one example of blind faith is christianity). We want people to think and take responsibilities for their actions, instead of holding some deity responsible that someone else made up. We all are our own gods.

I don’t hate those born-again christians and evangelists though. I just think they are terribly misguided. I rather have nice conversations with agnostics and jews instead. They at least don’t take themselves so seriously (I don’t either), and they are more inclined to think for themselves.

I also don’t get what their problem is. It’s not like this set of themes is pushed down your throat and you have to install it. All it takes is the “Home” button on your browser.

    Rege Satanas!
    Hail Satan!

  22. Coolvibe Says:

zyphrexi, but isn’t that censorship? Why not educate your children about what’s out there instead? Just let them look, they will lose interest in a while because it’s not forbidden anymore. No filtering needed. If you explicitly forbid, then it just becomes more attractive. Such is human nature.

  23. bubblywrap/beelzebub Says:

To Tony , let me guess, your one of the idiots who find it their duty to wake me up at 6 o’clock in the morning and stick their foot between my door to talk about jeebus
    …well
    ooozzaaooozzaoughaboughajeebusisanidiot …
    you are now cursed …

ps if nothing happens to you in the next 3days you might want to consider that there is no gOD

pps keep up the good …erhm BAD work guys ;)

  24. zyphrexi Says:

honestly I really don’t ‘get’ satanism. It’s not really a true religion. unless you are talking LaVeyan Satanism, which is more of a philosophy than religion.

“The christians here that rebuke this “distro” are incredibly misguided and short-sighted.”

How is this? Because I turn away from my bestial nature?

“We want people to think and take responsibilities for their actions”

so does God, that’s why he gave us free-will

If you accept Satan then you cannot deny God exists.

Drop satanism and take up philosophy, it’s far more interesting when you can view the world instead of the ground beneath your feet. Being christian doesn’t make you stupid or blind. Also note that I’ve not insulted you at all, which has absolutely nothing to do with me being christian as it does respecting your choice. Also evil is relative.

  25. Garry Says:

    Zyphrexi,

Why don’t YOU stop looking UP and look around at the world?

Who are the perpetrators of the evil you can see?

It’s Christians who are invading other countries for their own selfish ends. It’s Christians who are standing in the way of scientific progress which could cure disease and save lives. It’s Christians who are destroying the world’s resources to maintain their economies and all consuming way of life.

Yes, evil is relative, and compared to what the you are doing the rest is pretty insignificant.

  26. Zyphrexi Says:

“It’s Christians who are invading other countries for their own selfish ends.”

you cannot accuse a group or based on the actions of a few. One is not all.

“Who are the perpetrators of the evil you can see?”

I didn’t speak on evil except for stating that it was relative.

“It’s Christians who are standing in the way of scientific progress which could cure disease and save lives.”

that is true. I will not deny that. (concerning stem-cell research)

“It’s Christians who are destroying the world’s resources to maintain their economies and all consuming way of life.”

I don’t even know how to respond to that statement.

  27. Garry Says:

I’m sorry, the last statement was kind of sweeping. Let me clarify…

I was referring to George Bush’s environmental policies and the United States’ failure to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

  28. Zyphrexi Says:

no prob, I was reading back up a bit, originally when I posted I hadn’t realized that this was a joke, I thought this was totally serious. Also I enjoy a debate, and I’ll apologize for coming off as ‘huffy’ when I first posted. Any time you want to have a good natured debate, I’ll be up for it, but for now I think this is done.

As a side note, religion is very much a part of a person, and when you cut at that, you cut that person. So even if you do not agree, you should remember that the freedom that allows you to choose for or against, is that same freedom which allows others to do likewise.

I think a lot of people forget this, and I can’t speak for others, but as christians are human, i’m sure they are guilty as sin. haha bad joke.

(when I say ‘you’ I mean general ‘you’, not actually you, gary)

  29. Garry Says:

    Hi Zyphrexi,

Yes, this is a satirical website, so we don’t take ourselves too seriously. However, any time you want a good debate then you know where to come!

  30. Robert Says:

I probably won’t be installing this, but I am very impressed with the whole concept. I’m not a Satanist, but I am someone who believes that death metal is worthy of serious academic study (which it sometimes gets btw).

I love the way (intentionally or not) the beryl graphics reference Francis Bacon’s Study after Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X 1953 (http://freespace.virgin.net/april.hunter/Francis%20Bacon.htm).
